Mahdi Lavasani, recipient of the 2025 Hallett Memorial Scholarship, is a PhD student researching the molecular mechanisms of Parkinson’s Disease. His work focuses on how the neuronal protein alpha-synuclein interacts with cellular membranes and the autophagy protein LC3B, revealing how these interactions may contribute to protein aggregation and impaired autophagy in neurodegeneration.
From May 2 to 4, 2025 the University of Guelph hosted GDSC Hacks 2025: Build with AI, a student-led hackathon that brought together aspiring developers, designers, and innovators to tackle real-world problems using artificial intelligence. Organized by the Google Developer Student Club (GDSC) at U of G, the event welcomed participants from across Ontario for a weekend of collaboration, creativity and cutting-edge tech.

On Saturday, March 29th, the 53rd annual Southern Ontario Undergraduate Student Chemistry Conference (SOUSCC) took place at the University of Guelph, hosted by the Department of Chemistry. This conference gives universities the opportunity to showcase the research conducted by their undergraduate students. Muhammad Talha Sadaqat is the recipient of the 2024 Ian Pavlinic Memorial Award for Innovation Co-op Student of the Year in Computing. This award recognizes a co-op student in the School of Computer Science who has demonstrated innovation and collaboration, and made a positive impact during their work term. Sadaqat, a fifth-year Bachelor of Computing, Computer Science co-op student was nominated by his supervisor at Deloitte, for his exceptional 8-month work term with the Tax Gi3 Team. Two University of Guelph physics students, Michaela Hishon and Emma Greenall, attended CAP’s Canadian Conference for Undergraduate Women & Gender Minorities in Physics (CCUW*iP) held at University of Calgary from January 31st to February 2, 2025. Emma Greenall, a 4th year nanoscience student, got an honourable mention for her oral presentation and Michaela Hishon, a 4th year Biological and Medical physics student, won first place for her oral presentation.

Alexa Bates, a fourth year Environmental Engineering student, was recently recognized as one of Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists Under 25—a prestigious honor that speaks volumes about her impact. She is passionate about driving sustainability and creating change through student-led initiatives. She believes that engineering students have the power to solve pressing environmental challenges and inspire meaningful action within their communities.
The 75th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) was held at the Palais des Congrès located in downtown Montréal, Canada from August 18th to August 23th this year. Two University of Guelph graduate students in the Department of Chemistry won poster awards.
