Tremaine Visiting Speaker Series for Women in Science

History

The Tremaine Visiting Speaker for Women in Science was created by a very generous donation from the Tremaine family. The purpose is to bring speakers with expertise/experience relevant to women in STEM, such as:

  • Female scientists pursuing innovative research.
  • A researcher or professor who has pushed the boundaries for women in science.
  • An individual with experience in setting public policy which serves to remove barriers for women pursuing higher education and careers in STEM.

The series launches in October of 2023, hosted by the Department of Chemistry. The series will continue annually with a new department from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) hosting.

  • School of Computer Science 2024
  • Mathematics & Statistics 2025
  • Department of Physics 2026
  • Department of Chemistry 2027
Headshot of Dr. Joanna McGrenere

October 15-17, 2024 Dr. Joanna McGrenere

Dr. Joanna McGrenere is a Professor and Co-Head of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her research specializes in Human-Computer Interaction, with a focus on designing personalized user interfaces, as well as developing interactive systems for diverse user populations, including older adults, people with impairments and children. Joanna’s research has strong ties to industry, having been an IBM Visiting Scientist and received research support from organizations such as Microsoft, Samsung, Google and more.

Joanna was the inaugural chair of her department’s Committee on Outreach, Diversity, and Equity. Her lab has successfully attracted individuals from equity-deserving groups at higher rates than the national average for computing. Notably, four of her former PhD students, three of her postdocs, and one of her master’s students – all female – are now professors.

Joanna’s research leadership is demonstrated through appointments such as Inria International Research Chair and computing conference chair roles. She is also the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, her M.Sc. at UBC, and her B.Sc. at Western University.
