About the English + Visiting Student Program
The English + Visiting Student Program at the School of Continuing Studies offers international students a unique experience that combines academic English preparation, degree-credit study, and immersion in Canadian university life at the University of Guelph.
As an extension of the University of Guelph’s existing international opportunities, this pathway is designed for students who may not yet meet the direct English language entry requirements for the existing Visiting Student Program. Through this model, students can first build their academic English proficiency before progressing into the the Visiting Student Program at the University of Guelph.
This pathway allows students to develop confidence in academic communication and gain experience adapting to Canadian university life while preparing for success in degree-credit studies at the University of Guelph.
How it Works
We offer a structured pathway that combines academic English language development with degree-credit study.
Students typically complete three 7-week terms of English language instruction (ELCP) followed by one semester of degree-credit courses.
Partnership arrangements may vary depending on the specific needs of each institution or student group.
Sample Study Progression
Here is a recommended route for students looking to improve their English before beginning degree studies. Please note that this progression is only an example. Students are generally encouraged to have English proficiency at Levels 7/8 for entry into the English Language Certificate Program and Levels 9/10 for degree studies.
Placement is determined through testing at the start of the program. Students progress through ELCP levels before transitioning to degree-credit courses.
Admission Requirements
Students must demonstrate minimum English proficiency at the time of application:
- IELTS 5.5
- TOEFL iBT 60–78
- TOEFL PBT/iTP 500–549
- PTE 43–58
- Duolingo English Test 100–110
Final placement is determined upon arrival.
Expected Outcome from Students
- Students complete degree-credit courses at the University of Guelph
- Credits are typically transferred back to the home institution
- Students gain academic, linguistic, and cultural experience in a Canadian university setting
