Biological and Medical Physics (BMPH)
Why Biological and Medical Physics?
This major combines the University of Guelph’s strengths in physics, biochemistry and molecular biology applied to healthcare and the medical field. This interdisciplinary major will help you understand how physicists contribute to our knowledge of the biological world. Specialized upper-year courses such as radiation physics and medical imaging will teach you how medical physicists diagnose and treat cancer, while a molecular biophysics course will help you learn about molecular structure and its role in various diseases.
The course calendar for Fall 2025 entry to Biological and Medical Physics will be available later in 2024/25
Solving Complex Human Health Challenges
Engage in Distinct Science Courses
Students can take a unique-to-Guelph Science Communications course in upper years to develop skills to help non-specialists understand physics concepts.
Improve Human Health and Medical Fields
Gain experience in modern medical imaging and clinical applications of bio-physics.
Gain Laboratory Experience and Recognition
Our students graduate with exceptional lab experience, with a high rate of student awards and authoring/co-authoring papers in physics research journals.
What Can You Do with a Degree in Biological and Medical Physics?
Graduates from this program possess an excellent background for careers in the expanding interdisciplinary research laboratories of government and industry, as well as a starting point for a career in medical physics, through theoretical knowledge development and hands-on research and laboratory experience.
Here are just a few careers our graduates have successfully pursued:
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) specialist
- CAT scan technician
- Forensic scientist
- Laboratory Testing Analyst
- Quantitative Analyst
- Imaging Software Developer
- Health Physicist
- Health and Safety Technician
Gain Valuable Experience Through Co-op
Biological and Medical Physics co-op is a five-year program, which includes five work terms. This co-op prepares students for their work terms by helping them develop professional attitudes and skills expected in the workplace as well as helping to build a toolkit of resume and cover letter writing as well as interview skills.
