Walmart eyes second Guelph store in former Target location

The lease to the former Target store on Stone Road in Guelph has been acquired by Walmart Canada.  Walmart Canada has signalled interest in taking over the former Target store location on Stone Road to set up its second retail outlet in Guelph.

On Friday, the corporation said it plans to spend about $165 million to acquire 13 former Target Canada locations across the country and a further $185 million on renovations. This deal includes the lease for the former Target store in Guelph as well as a distribution centre in Cornwall.

Marriott Expanding in Canada with Purchase of Delta Hotel Brand

Marriott International Inc. has signed a deal to buy the Delta hotel brand.  Under the agreement, the U.S. hotel chain will take over the management and

franchise operations for the 38 Delta hotels and resorts including 10,000 rooms across Canada from the provincial investment manager.

Marriott, which has more than 4,100 hotels around the world, says the acquisition will bring its operations to more than 120 hotels and 27,000 rooms in Canada.

Guelph Gym Gets a New Name

GUELPH–One of the city's highest profile fitness centres, The Athletic Club, has changed its name.

It's now Movati Athletic.

"Movati stands for "Movement" and "Motivation," the perfect name for this dynamic new chapter in our story," the centre's Facebook page announces.

Renovations are also underway to several areas of the fitness centre and gymnasium off Stone Road, an online schedule reporting the work began Dec. 8 and concludes Friday.

"They're doing quite a bit of renovating," member Angie Morrison of Guelph, welcoming the developments.

Heritage Fund to Support Scholarships, Information Systems

The Board of Governors recently approved disbursement of $7 million from the Heritage Fund for graduate scholarships and information management systems supporting research and advancement at the University of Guelph.

The allocations were approved during B of G’s first meeting of the 2014-15 academic year Oct. 22.
