Classical Languages

Department of Languages and Literatures, College of Arts.

The Classical Languages program imparts an advanced knowledge of Greek and Latin and is designed for students who have a special interest in literature and philosophy or plan to do postgraduate study in any area of Classics.

Core requirements

All students are required to complete the following courses

48-202 Greek Language and Culture
61-200 Latin Literature
One of:
48-210 Greek Epic
48-220 Greek Prose Authors
48-230 Tragedy and Comedy
One of:
48-301 Themes in Greek Literature
48-302 Themes in Greek Literature
48-303 Themes in Greek Literature
One of:
61-215 Latin Lyric Poetry
61-216 The Roman Moral Tradition
61-217 The Roman Epic Tradition
One of:
61-215 Latin Lyric Poetry
61-216 The Roman Moral Tradition
61-217 The Roman Epic Tradition
One of:
61-315 Elegy and Eros
61-316 Didactic Literature
61-325 Roman Historiography

Honours Program Major

A minimum of 18 courses is required:

  1. Classical Languages core
  2. Two courses from Classical Studies List A.
  3. Ten courses in Greek or Latin (at least 7 at the 200/300 level and 3 at the 400 level).

Honours Program Minor

A minimum of 12 courses is required:

  1. Classical Languages core
  2. Six courses in Greek or Latin (at least 2 at the 300/400 level).
