One Mind Rising Star Awards
One Mind, in collaboration with Janssen Research & Development, Donna Friedman, and Robina Riccitiello, is offering up to three Rising Star Research Awards in 2021. The goal of the One Mind Rising Star Research Awards is to build capacity and accelerate research on neuropsychiatric disorders by recognizing and funding promising, early career investigators through a competitive grants process. One Mind, in collaboration with Inscopix, is also offering up to two supplemental technology grants, each in support of one Rising Star Research Award.
The scope of the three 2021 Rising Star Awards varies as described below. Applicants will be considered for all that fit their proposal.
- The One Mind / Janssen Rising Star Award in Memory of Jeffrey S. Nye, MD, PhD, is open to proposals for translational research on any neuropsychiatric disorder.
- The One Mind Robina Riccitiello Rising Star Depression Research Award is open to proposals for translational and clinical research on depression and related disorders.
- The One Mind Donna Friedman Rising Star Eating Disorders Research Award is limited to translational and clinical research on eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia or compulsive eating disorders
One Mind/Inscopix Technology Supplemental Grant:
Applicants whose proposals can be enhanced by optical methods to investigate links between neural circuit/ensemble dynamics and disease phenotypes are within scope and are encouraged to apply for this supplemental grant from Inscopix
All questions about the supplemental One Mind/Inscopix Technology Grant, including technological feasibility, should be addressed to Dr. Pushkar Joshi, Director of Strategy at Inscopix: firstname.lastname@example.org.
To qualify as an early career investigator, candidates should be within 10 years of their initial independent appointment as an assistant professor for academic institutions or equivalent positions for industry or other non-academic positions. Note that postdoctoral fellows are ineligible.
Candidates should have demonstrated productivity and innovation in a scientific field that can be applied to the study of neuropsychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, addiction, bipolar disorder, depression, posttraumatic stress, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, suicidality, and other serious psychiatric illnesses.
The proposal should not overlap with existing funding.
Applicants may apply for the One Mind/Inscopix Technology Grant only as a supplement to a Rising Star Award proposal. Applicants cannot solely apply to the Technology Grant.

Indirect costs are limited to a maximum of 10% and will be taken from the direct costs.
If College-level review is required, your College will communicate its earlier internal deadlines.
If your nomination will be submitted by a nominator other than the VPR, please submit directly to the sponsor by the external deadline. Please also submit a copy of the full nomination and OR-5 to email@example.com.
How to Apply
The Vice-President (Research) encourages nominations for this prestigious award, and will serve as nominator for those nominees recommended by the Research Honours and Awards Advisory Committee. If you wish to nominate a colleague or to be considered for VPR nomination, please submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to firstname.lastname@example.org by the internal deadline.
An Expression of Interest will include:
- A draft letter (two-three pages) addressed to the VPR, signed by your ADR, which outlines how you/your nominee meets the criteria outlined on the One Mind Rising Star Research Awards website.
- An up-to-date CV for nominee (and each member of the team, if applicable)
As this is an international prize, the University may engage the Global Excellence Initiative to coordinate external review of nomination.
If your nomination will be submitted by a different nominee, and therefore does not require the Vice-President's endorsement, please submit a complete nomination and OR-5 to email@example.com by the external deadline.
