Water Collaboration Research Team Hosts Oneida Nation of the Thames

Submitted by dfoolen on March 11th, 2020 8:40 AM

On Thursday March 5, 2020, SEDRD had the wonderful opportunity to host visitors from Oneida Nation of the Thames, collaborators on the SSHRC-funded project “Collaborative Water Services Between First Nations and Municipalities in Ontario [1]”. Visitors included members of the Oneida Environment Committee, community Elders, youth and educators. Organized by Dr. Sheri Longboat (co-Investigator) and the Oneida Environment Committee, the group participated in a series of activities including a beekeeping workshop, presentation on OAC post-secondary opportunities, and a campus tour. The Oneida youth also participated in wayfinding activities led by Rosemary Spring (Aboriginal Liaison), while Brandon Doxtator (Oneida Environment Committee) provided an informative presentation and discussion around Oneida’s water challenges for members of the SSHRC project research team. Co-Investigator Dr. Chris Alcantara (Western University) and PI Brady Deaton (FARE), were in attendance, as were SEDRD faculty and graduate students. The day ended with a meeting at the OAC Dean's office to discuss opportunities for collaboration in research and teaching. Overall, a fruitful day of sharing and exchange!
