Submitted by dfoolen on September 5th, 2023 4:33 PM

Immigration and migration are having dramatic impacts on rural communities throughout Canada. Prof. Ryan Gibson recently explored trends in Canadian immigration and their impacts on economic development, policy, and rural communities in a recent guest lecture at Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México.

Prof. Gibson shared an overview of immigration pathways to Canada, both permanent and temporary, examined immigration trends and the impact of COVID-19, and identified rural immigration strategies. Research findings emerging from two Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance research initiatives: (i) Labour Shortages and Newcomer Attraction and (ii) International Agricultural Workers and Rural Housing.

The lecture was part of the Financial and International Economy Conference hosted in Toluca, Mexico. Prof. Lidia Carvajal (Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México) also shared research findings on remittances of Temporary Foreign Workers in Ontario. Prof. Carvajal’s research examined the value of remittances and how remittances are utilized in Mexico.
