The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) recently honoured Dr. Robert Brown with a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his pioneering research in microclimatic landscape architecture and evidence-based design. Dr. Brown, Professor Emeritus at the University of Guelph and a Professor at Texas A&M University, has spent decades advancing the science of landscape architecture. Dr. Brown’s research in microclimatic landscape design has had global impact. With more than 140 refereed journal articles, he has helped build a strong evidence-based foundation for landscape architecture.

Dr. Brown's research focusses on how elements in the landscape modify the different components of the microclimate, and how the microclimate affects the thermal comfort of people. By integrating these, landscape architects can design environments that modify the microclimate to create thermally comfortable outdoor environments. This is particularly important in the context of global climate change and intensification of urban heat islands.

SEDRD is proud to celebrate Dr. Brown's recognition by CELA.

About Us

The School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) brings together major academic fields concerned with creating strong communities, in Canada and around the world. The four highly respected programs in SEDRD share many common goals but approach them in different and complementary ways. This model reflects the imperatives in building authentic communities where planners, landscape architects, communicators, and citizens all play important interdependent roles in community strength.
