New research published in the Journal of Rural and Community Development explores how rural communities can strengthen connection, innovation, and local development in challenging geographic regions. In “The Peaks and Valleys of Connection: Lessons from the Scottish Highlands and Islands [1],” authors Blake Glassford and Ryan Gibson examine how the Smart Village approach has been used in the Scottish Highlands and Islands to improve connectivity and support rural communities.

Drawing on policy analysis and interviews with local leaders and organizations, the article highlights how place-based and community-driven strategies can help rural regions respond to challenges related to broadband access, geography, and economic development. The findings offer practical lessons not only for Scotland, but also for mountainous and rural communities in Canada and beyond that are looking for new ways to build resilience and opportunity.
