Trained as a landscape architect (University of Guelph, 1990) and as an architect (University of Oregon, 1999) James’ career path has focused on projects that bridge the two disciplines. In the past 17 years project work has taken James to Australia, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, The Caribbean, Central America, Europe and throughout the United States and Canada. Much of Mr. James’ work has focused on creating pedestrian oriented ‘places’ in mountain, seaside and desert settings.

James lecture will address sustainability as is integrated at all levels into JWT projects as well as his corporate culture. At the highest level his large scale projects integrate sustainability into land use planning best management practices. These BIM’s include balancing employment, housing, recreation and environmental protection through smart growth strategies. On the site level, he looks to conserve resources, harvest rain water and take advantage of sun wind and earth to heat and cool our buildings.   On another level, creating sustainable designs requires consensus building, communication and education. As an expert communicator and proponent of an integrated public process James believes that anyone can become a champion of the environment.

JWT has worked along side of many nationally recognized Canadian and US corporate design houses including MillerHull, LRK, DPZ, Hart Howerton, Land Inc., SWA and EDAW.

James is also a WesternLiving’s “Designer of the Year 2013” in the “Ones to Watch, Arthur Erickson Memorial Award, and Eco” categories.
