Engineering Students Win 2023 MetSoc Photo Contest

Two engineering students at the University of Guelph have won top prizes for a photo contest hosted by the Metallurgy and Materials Society (MetSoc) of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM). M.A.Sc. mechanical engineering student Sevda Fathipour won first place, while fourth year mechanical engineering student Gautam Naresh Genani won third place for the 2023 MetSoc Student Multi-Scale Image Contest.

The winners’ images were displayed at the 62nd Annual Conference of Metallurgists in Toronto on August 21-24, 2023.

The photo held by Gautam, second from the right, shows a Mg-Zn-Ca intermetallic network plate phase in a biomedical magnesium alloy after which the magnesium matrix has been dissolved away. They are pictured with their supervisor, Dr. Abdallah Elsayed (left) and Dr. Elyse Roach.
