Commitment to Excellence in Teaching and Research

U of G is committed to excellence in teaching and research. Guelph spends more on instruction and research costs (measured as a percentage of its expenditures) than the majority of other universities in Ontario – well above the provincial average.  And the University is among the top three universities which spend the least on central administrative costs measured as a percentage of total expenditures.

Teaching Excellence

In the 2006 University Report Card commissioned by the Globe and Mail, students gave the University of Guelph high marks among all Canadian comprehensive universities in all measures of faculty quality; teaching style, knowledge, availability after hours, teaching quality and useful feedback.  In the same survey, Guelph also received the top mark in student satisfaction with their overall education experience. Thirteen Guelph faculty have been awarded the prestigious 3M awards for teaching excellence.

Maclean's also found the University of Guelph to be ranked 1st in all of Canada for Faculty with PhD's, well ahead of the national average in the comprehensive universities category.

Graduate Programs

The University of Guelph offers a broad range of magisterial and doctoral level program which cover the full range of disciplines in the arts and humanities, social sciences, natural and physical sciences, agriculture, and veterinary science.  The depth of a graduate program is often measured in terms of doctoral level students.  Doctoral enrolments account for one-third of graduate enrolment.  In the 2006 University Report Card, students ranked Guelph well above its competitor institutions in terms of quality of graduate programs and leading edge research.
