Filming On Campus

Filming on Campus Policy

Commercial and educational filming on University of Guelph property by external media production organizations has several benefits to the University and surrounding communities. Viewing the University and its various properties in a feature film can create a positive reaction among the public, students, alumni, faculty and staff. It can also reinforce the University's commitment to supporting the arts and its willingness to assist, where appropriate, in filming projects. It can also provide a new revenue source to the University through location fees.

To ensure that filming does not place excessive demands on University staff time; does not damage the physical plant; and does not disrupt academic/research activities, the University requires a filming policy.

This policy defines how space and facilities on University property can be used as film locationsby external media production organizations without disruption or cost to the University. Its aim is to:

  • Generate revenue, recover all costs of this service and provide financial compensation to those areas where interior filming is undertaken.
  • Enrich student learning opportunities.
  • Enhance the University's relations with the external community.
  • Preserve the University's image and reputation.

A film liaison service in University Hospitality Services will respond to the needs of commercial production companies producing feature films, commercials and still photography, and protect the best interests of the University and its faculty, staff and students.

The policy will not apply to news and public affairs coverage of University events, activities and personalities by television, film or sound recording. This coverage will be approved and arranged by Media Relations in University Communications. Coverage of sports events will be approved and arranged by the Department of Athletics. When news and public affairs coverage includes complex documentary filming, this policy willapply, including fees, and service will be provided by the film liaison service.
