GenEQ

Gender Equity at the University of Guelph

Excellence. Equity. Diversity. They're fundamental to supporting a strong University poised to improve life.

GenEQ, an initiative to advance gender equity at the University of Guelph, will help us:

    • understand the barriers to equity for women, trans, and gender diverse* individuals on campus
    • support gender equity in leadership roles across the University
    • advance the status of all women, trans, and gender diverse individuals on our campuses and beyond

This initiative needs insight and support from all University community members. Together, we can create real and lasting change to improve life for everyone at the University of Guelph.

*Trans and gender diverse individuals include those who are transgender, non-binary, Two-Spirit, genderqueer, agender, and other gender-diverse identities.

    Why Gender Equity?

We are all responsible for improving gender equity. Being a University that values inclusivity means acknowledging the importance of diversity among us.

It means understanding that some individuals and groups in our community face barriers to education, employment, and full participation in our society. It means addressing systemic challenges affecting our institution so we can reach our full potential as a leader in higher education.

    Support

This multi-phase initiative is supported by all levels of senior leadership. It is a priority under the portfolio of our President & Vice-Chancellor.

The GenEQ: Advancing Gender Equity at the University of Guelph Advisory Committee is responsible for recommending programs, practices, and policy changes at the University of Guelph aimed at promoting, facilitating and supporting gender equity and inclusivity within the university for women and trans and gender diverse individuals.

    Meet the Chair of GenEQ

    Dr. Leanne Son Hing

    • Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Guelph
    • Chair of the Psychology Department's Indigenization, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Committee

Dr. Son Hing is an expert on DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). She studies inequalities and inequities in the workplace, education, and society. She researches how inequities are produced within organizations and how organizations can work to mitigate discrimination and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Son Hing investigates the factors that lead to discrimination, such as sexism, racism, classism, and other forms of bias.

She also investigates people's understandings of the inequalities that exist in our society and the degree to which they derive from meritocratic practices versus discrimination, bias, and the processes of cumulative advantage and disadvantage. She also explores how the experience of discrimination and subtle forms of mistreatment affect workers' job attitudes and well-being.

Dr. Son Hing has published two important papers on gender inequities and inequalities in organizations:

    • Stamarski, C. S., & Son Hing, L. S. (2015). Gender inequalities in the workplace: the effects of organizational structures, processes, practices, and decision makers' sexism. Frontiers in Psychology, 6, 1- 20.
    • Son Hing, L. S., Sakr, N., Sorenson, J. B., Stamarski, C. S., Caniera, K., & Colaco, C. (2023). Gender inequities in the workplace: A holistic review of organizational processes and practices. Human Resource Management Review, 33(3).
