Masters in Project Management Program Overview

Future You will lead with innovation.

The Masters in Project Management combines classroom learning with real world application to provide specialized project management training that supports project related managerial decision making and leadership.

This program will prepare mid to senior-level leaders to excel in careers that utilize project management such as information technology, engineering, life sciences, health care, transportation and media. You will be required to attend weekly face-to-face learning and online coursework, students must be willing and able to travel to the University of Guelph. Students who complete the program at an accelerated (full-time) pace can expect to commit 40 hours each week during the program. Working professionals who complete the program at an extended pace can expect to commit 20-25 hours each week during the program.

Program Timeline

Accelerated

The Lang MPM can be completed in as few as 12 months (i.e., 3 semesters) of full-time study. You will begin the program by attending the on-campus Lang Conference at the beginning of the summer semester. In your final semester, you will complete a Project Management Capstone course.

Working Professionals

To accommodate the busy schedules of working professionals, the Lang MPM can be completed over as many as 24 months (i.e., 6 semesters).  You will begin the program by attending the on-campus Lang Conference at the beginning of the summer semester. In your final semester, you will complete a Project Management Capstone course.

Graduate Diploma

The Lang School also offers a 4-month (1 semester) Graduate Diploma in Project Management, where you will complete four courses. Graduate Diploma students looking to transfer into the Master’s program before the end of their first semester would apply for a program transfer. An approved program transfer would allow all credits obtained within the Graduate Diploma program to count toward the Master’s degree. Students who have transferred to the Master’s degree would not also be eligible to receive the Graduate Diploma.

Lang Masters in Project Management Courses

Core Courses

Project Management: This course provides students with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and practices for project management. It introduces an understanding and appreciation of the importance of managing projects, project teams, the project management systems and tools, the various components of the project management process, and professional codes of conduct and ethics. The emphasis is on the techniques most frequently used in the context of, both internal and external organizational roles of a project manager.

Business Consulting: This course provides students with an understanding of the concepts, principles, and practices for management consulting. Students will be exposed to the various components of the consulting process, consulting approaches and styles, client- consultant relationships, issue and problem diagnosis, reporting of results, and professional codes of conduct and ethics. The emphasis is on techniques most frequently used in the context of both internal and external organizational roles and as a career choice.

Business Analytics: In this course, students learn how to analyze and visualize statistical data to make evidence-based business decisions. Students will work with data using established statistical techniques to generate findings and interpret and communicate those findings to make practical managerial decisions.

Advanced Project Management: In this course, students learn advanced project management techniques, including estimation, scheduling, costing, scope management, quality management and project closure.

Special Topics in Project Management: In this course, students will gain an understanding of various aspects of current topics relevant to the practice of project management. Sample topics include agile approaches to project management, managing virtual teams, environmental sustainability in project management and cross-cultural project management.

Project Procurement and Supply Chain Management: In this course, students will learn how to work with suppliers and contractors in an organization's supply chain to procure the materials and services required to complete a project. Students will learn core principles of the procurement process as well as planning, scheduling, contracting, and managing influence within the supply chain.

Leadership Assessment and Development: This course provides a conceptual overview of the leadership competencies that lead to leadership performance. Students will explore and learn a method for assessing their own leadership competencies. They will learn a process for developing themselves, the knowledge and skills relevant for effective leadership. Topics include managerial competencies models, assessment models, learning styles, intentional change process, and personal development plan. This course emphasizes those techniques most frequently used in personal development and coaching individuals and teams.

Project Governance: In this course, students develop the strategic competencies needed in the practice of project management, including aligning projects with organizational strategy, selecting projects, obtaining funding, managing costs and finances, managing portfolios, structuring projects, and structuring organizational roles for effective project oversight.
