OVC Welcomes Dr. Anne Deckert as new Faculty in the Department of Population Medicine

Welcome to Dr. Anne Deckert who recently joined Ontario Veterinary College’s (OVC) Department of Population Medicine as an assistant professor with a focus on swine health management.

Deckert graduated from OVC’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program in 1990 and practiced as a food animal veterinarian in south-western Ontario for two years before pursuing a Master of Science degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She returned to U of G in 2012 to complete her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 2012.

Her work with swine research evolved from a place close to home, growing up on a pig farm and working closely with Dr. Robert Friendship as a summer research assistant while in veterinary school.

Since then, Deckert’s research has focused on investigating the relationships between antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial use, antimicrobial use metrics, knowledge translation strategies, Campylobacter resistance in multiple commodities, and antimicrobial resistance in swine. Her current research interests include Swine health and production including managing hyper-prolific sows, climate change impacts on pig production, sow mortality and antimicrobial use and resistance.

This research has been the focus of many positions she’s held throughout her career. In addition to holding a position as a staff veterinarian at OVC’s Health Sciences Centre (HSC) since 1997, she has served as a veterinary epidemiologist with the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (CIPARS) at the Public Health Agency of Canada since it’s start in 2002. Deckert has also worked as a consultant for FAO and WHO on antimicrobial use and resistance surveillance projects in Central Asia.
