New Pet Loss and Grief Resources Launched by OVC Pet Trust
The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) at the University of Guelph has introduced a groundbreaking online resource hub to support pet caregivers through the difficult experience of losing a beloved companion animal.
The Pet Loss Support Resource Centre, curated by OVC Pet Trust, offers free, evidence-informed tools including a new video documentary series, expert interviews, downloadable guides, and links to counselling and support groups. These resources combine compassion with education and are among the first of their kind in North America.
At the heart of the initiative is Always Near Me: Navigating Pet Loss, a six-part documentary series created in partnership with award-winning Canadian filmmakers. The series shares real stories of love, loss and healing, alongside expert insights from veterinary social workers and mental health professionals.
“These resources reflect OVC’s commitment to supporting the human–animal bond, not only through clinical excellence but also by addressing the emotional dimensions of care,” says Dr. Jeff Wichtel, dean of OVC.
The project was made possible through The Banjo Fund, established in memory of a beloved Basset Hound, and underscores OVC Pet Trust’s mission to provide meaningful support for families and veterinary professionals navigating grief.
