Discover Vet School Gives Aspiring Veterinarians A Look Behind The Scenes At OVC

Aspiring veterinarians can take a look behind the scenes at the Ontario Veterinary College with Discover Vet School.

Discover Vet School is a three-day lecture and lab series hosted by the International Veterinary Medicine Club at OVC.

The event provides an opportunity for students of all ages to experience a day in the life of a student veterinarian and learn about animal science, whether they are a high school student, an undergraduate who is considering veterinary medicine as a future career, or just an animal lover.

The 12th annual Discover Vet School (DVS) will take place on three dates this year: January 29 (virtually), March 5 (in-person*) and March 26 (virtually). (*In the event DVS cannot be held in-person due to COVID-19 protocols, the in-person day will be moved to an online format.) Attendees can participate in one, two or all three days.

Delivered by faculty, veterinarians, staff, alumni, and student veterinarians from OVC, discussion topics will include small animals, large animals, wildlife, and marine mammals, as well as special topics including emergency medicine, shelter medicine, and One Health, which is the collaborative effort of multiple disciplines working together on our planet’s most complex animal, human and environmental health problems. A Q&A session with current OVC Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students will also be provided.

New this year, the Canadian VIBE (Veterinary professionals Instilling Black Excellence) Network and the Ontario Veterinary College have announced a new collaboration to provide several sponsored seats to support Black students of any age who are interested in veterinary medicine Launched in 2020, Canadian VIBE works to create a collaborative network of Black veterinary professionals throughout Canada.

Applicants, who can apply online for the fully funded seats, must identify as Black. Priority will be given to applicants with financial need and those who can attend all three days of Discover Vet School. A portion of the proceeds from Discover Vet School will be donated to Vets Without Borders, a Canadian international development organization that engages volunteers to improve the health of animals, people, and the environment all over the world. Vets Without Borders provides opportunities for student veterinarians to volunteer and gain experience in the summers between school semesters.

The remaining proceeds from Discover Vet School 2022 will support Global Vets - an activity of OVC's International Veterinary Medicine Club that offers student veterinarians a unique opportunity to investigate animal health care in developing countries.
