    Profile

Dr. Basem (Bas) Gohar is an assistant professor in the Department of Population Medicine and leads the University of Guelph’s Research in Occupational Health & Wellness (UGROHW) lab. He holds academic appointments at the University of Guelph’s Psychology Department, the University of Waterloo’s School of Public Health Sciences, and Laurentian University’s Centre for Research in Occupational Safety & Health. He is also a registered clinical psychologist in Ontario. With a unique educational, research, and clinical background, Bas teaches mental health literacy, clinical communication, and ethics to student veterinarians. He also teaches qualitative health research and knowledge synthesis at the graduate level.

    Research Interests

Bas’s research interests lie in public health, with a focus on occupational and workplace mental health. He has a strong funding track record, including tri-council (CIHR & SSHRC) and industry funding, and has authored several peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals. His previous research explored predictors of sickness absenteeism and the psychosocial impact of COVID-19 across various occupational groups. These findings have led to his current research interests in human and veterinary medicine, particularly in: (1) staffing shortages and employee retention, including organizational commitment; (2) moral injury; and (3) preparedness to practice. Bas applies a range of research methods, including knowledge syntheses (e.g., meta-analyses & scoping reviews), as well as quantitative and qualitative approaches. In addition to conducting research, his lab is also disseminating knowledge in creative ways, including the new initiative #WORKSHORTS, which are short videos related to workplace mental health in healthcare found on our LinkedIn and Instagram.
