Profile
I joined Integrative Biology in 2013 as a lab instructor. I currently teach the Physiology lab courses (ZOO3610/30) and coordinate the Marine Biology and Oceanography field course (ZOO4300). Previously I have taught labs in Histology (ZOO3000), Developmental Biology (ZOO3050), Experimental Comparative Animal Physiology (ZOO4170), Field Ecology (BIOL4410), Ornithology (ZOO4920) and coordinated both Evolution (BIOL2400) and Pandemics: Culture, Science and Society (UNIV2020). Before arriving in Guelph, I gained experience teaching labs at Vancouver Community College and lecturing at Simon Fraser University. During my graduate studies, I undertook formal training in University Teaching from Woodsworth College at the University of Toronto.
As a graduate student I studied synaptic physiology using invertebrate models such as crayfish and fruit flies. At Simon Fraser University, I investigated presynaptic inhibition and synaptic plasticity at the crayfish neuromuscular junction. At the University of Toronto, Mississauga, I used the Drosophila neuromuscular junction as a model to study synaptic transmission. I engineered a series of transgenic lines of flies with targeted changes to the amino acid sequence of synaptic proteins and tested the fundamental mechanisms of exocytosis.
