Genus BESSA Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863

BESSA Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863b: 164. Type species: Bessa secutrix Robineau-Desvoidy, 1863 (= Tachina selecta Meigen, 1824), by original designation [Palearctic].
PTYCHOMYIA Brauer & Bergenstamm, 1889: 89 (also 1890: 21). Type species: Tachina selecta Meigen, 1824, by monotypy.
DAEOCHAETA Townsend, 1892a: 97. Type species: Daeochaeta harveyi Townsend, 1892, by original designation.

harveyi (Townsend, 1892).– Southern Northwest Territories to Newfoundland, south to Washington and Ohio, also California, Arizona (S&A, 1965), Yukon, Vermont, New Hampshire (CNC).
– Daeochaeta harveyi Townsend, 1892a: 98 (also subsequently spelled harvei, in error). Type data: holotype male [published as ?female] (SEMK). Type locality: USA, Maine, Orono.
– Masicera tenthredinidarum Townsend, 1892c: 285. Type data: holotype female [abdomen missing] (SEMK). Type locality: Canada, Ontario, Ottawa. Type host: sawfly.

selecta (Meigen, 1824).– Europe.
– Tachina selecta Meigen, 1824: 377. Type data: holotype male [not female as cited by Townsend, 1941: 207] (MNHN). Type locality: Germany, Nordrhein, probably Stolberg (according to Herting, 1984: 17).
Note: Sabrosky & Arnaud (1965: 1053) reported Bessa selecta as introduced into North America and on this basis O'Hara & Wood (2004: 144) recorded B. selecta from America north of Mexico. Upon further study, we can find no evidence that B. selecta was introduced into North America. Early reports of B. selecta in North America were based on misidentifications of native Bessa harveyi (Townsend) and these reports appear to account for the catalogue entry of Sabrosky & Arnaud (1965).
