World Agriculture and Economic Development

This course examines agricultural household production models, programs and policies which affect agriculture, food security and the role of agriculture in economic development.

Urbanization and Development
GEOG6400
This course analyzes recent urbanization in the ‘developing world’ and its implications for rural change. Discussion is at three scales: the global urban system, the national system and the internal characteristics of large cities.

Land Use and Agricultural Systems
GEOG6200
Rural land uses and processes, particularly agricultural systems, their dynamics and interactions with the resource base and competing activities. Theoretical models and analytical methods related to applied questions in agricultural decision making and land use planning.

Social Change in Rural Agricultural Systems
SOC6420 or ANTH6420
Examination of different theoretical models used to explain changes in the rural sector of developed industrial countries and the Third World. Case studies to illustrate different types of rural agricultural systems and how they change (including forms of land tenure and rural social stratification.
