Dr. Claudia Wagner-Riddle Named Inaugural Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Climate-Smart Soils
University of Guelph environmental scientist set to boost her internationally recognized research on soils and climate mitigation thanks to new gift from the Jarislowsky Foundation.
The University of Guelph’s Dr. Claudia Wagner-Riddle has been named the inaugural Stephen A. Jarislowsky Chair in Climate-Smart Soils, strengthening the University’s global leadership in sustainable agriculture.
Supported by a $4-million investment from the Jarislowsky Foundation, and matching funds from the University, Dr. Wagner-Riddle will continue her world-class research and innovation in greenhouse gas mitigation and climate-smart farming practices.
Dr. Wagner-Riddle’s research has informed policies and practices across Canada and internationally, helping producers adopt sustainable approaches that protect both productivity and the environment. She leads CanN₂ONet, a national network dedicated to reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions, and is the Canadian lead of NICCEE, the Global Nitrogen Innovation Center for Clean Energy and the Environment.
Her research bridges science and practice, uniting researchers, policymakers, and farmers to develop solutions that build agricultural sustainability.

Dr. Wagner-Riddle is a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences, part of U of G’s Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). She’s also an executive co-director of the Soils at Guelph initiative.

The Jarislowsky Chair in Climate-Smart Soils will serve as a catalyst for collaboration, bringing together scientists, producers, and policymakers to advance soil carbon storage, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and sustainable land management. The position will also focus on mentoring students and building national and international partnerships to accelerate progress in soil science and climate-smart farming
