Master of Science (MSc) in Population Medicine - Caregivers’ Perceptions of Physical Activity for Pets

This research presents an exciting opportunity to understand dog and cat caregivers’ perceptions, decisions and expectations regarding physical activity for their pets. The outcomes of this research will significantly enhance our understanding of this under-researched area and improve the recommendations provided to pet caregivers. This project builds on a previous successful study that examined dog and cat caregivers’ perceptions, decisions and experiences with feeding treats.

Program Details

Duration: 2 years.

Start Date: Summer 2025 or Fall 2025.

Application Deadline: The position will be held open until a suitable candidate is found.

Funding: The successful candidate will meet all requirements to apply for an OVC graduate student scholarship and will be provided with industry-supported top-up funds for that scholarship. There is potential for the successful applicant to transfer to a PhD program of study.

Key Features

As part of the prescribed and elective courses and research components of the graduate MSc degree program, the successful applicant will gain experience and develop a sound understanding in:

  • Veterinary epidemiology
  • Statistical analyses
  • Use of effective research methodologies (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication
  • Presenting scientific work to a wide audience

Eligibility

Qualifications and attributes of the successful candidate include:

  • Canadian permanent resident or citizen who is eligible to apply for an OVC scholarship.
  • Excellent academic record: Admission requirements to qualify for entry. In the Population Medicine department, the minimum academic admission requirements are:
    • MSc (both course-based and thesis-based): An honours degree with a minimum average of B- in the last four semesters of full-time study or DVM degree (or its equivalent) with a minimum overall average of B-.
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively in a team.
  • Excellent reading, writing, comprehension, and communication skills in English.
  • Keen interest in the research topic.
  • Background in previous quantitative or qualitative research methodologies and statistical analyses would be an asset.
