The First-Year Seminars Program (FYS), offers small interdisciplinary classes (22 students), that are engaging, enquiry-based, and learner-centered. These courses are designed to help first year students in their transition from high school to university. - Students will engage directly with contemporary issues and ideas, in an inclusive environment. Students will also have a unique opportunity to connect with their peers from across the university. Instructors will work closely with students to help them take responsibility for their own teaching and learning opportunities. These seminars foster strong academic foundations, and help students develop interpersonal skills that will benefit them beyond their time at the UofG. - First Year Seminars also offer instructors the opportunity to re-think their teaching, and explore creative, and active learning pedagogy. Leading a small group of energized students offers a dynamic teaching experience that is unique to the FYS program. - Applicants must submit an application via a Qualtrics survey: (https://uoguelph.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6K9I1mAJzYtDSsK) - Each application will be assessed on the strength of the Course description and Outline (i.e., Learning outcomes (LOs), and aligned with UOG undergraduate LOs; Constructive Alignment between LOs and Teaching & Learning Activities and Assessment). - Other assessment criteria for FYS proposals include: Interdisciplinarity (at least 3 disciplines incorporated beyond your own College), Uniqueness, Learner Centered and instructor role as facilitator, Active/Collaborative Pedagogy, Balance Academic Rigor with Inclusion, Fit (current climate as well as instructors background), Fun/Dynamism/Pizzazz. - Applicants are also encouraged to demonstrate their prior teaching experience and competence, including engagement in their own teaching, and learning development, and evidence of past teaching effectiveness. Be sure to review the proposal guidelines here: https://www.uoguelph.ca/vpacademic/fys/how-facilitate-first-year-seminar - NOTE: Those who carry ROFR must exercise their ROFR by 'applying' to this posting, per new LOU#17 (starts on pg 16 here: https://www.uoguelph.ca/facultyrelations/system/files/CUPE3913%20Signed%20MOS%20Unit%202.pdf). - The University of Guelph has vaccination and masking policies that may be altered with limited notice depending on COVID-19 circumstances and advice from government, public health authorities, and prevailing science. Currently, the vaccination policy is paused while masking is still required (https://news.uoguelph.ca/2022/04/covid-19-update-what-to-expect-with-upcoming-changes/). With the evolving nature of the pandemic, public health measures may resume with little advance notice to address the health risks. Should this occur, vaccinations will be required. The U of G’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy can be found here: https://www.uoguelph.ca/hr/staff-faculty-hr-policies-support-staff/713-covid-19-vaccination-policy.
