A Sessional Lecturer who holds a Right of First Refusal (RoFR; i.e., for a particular course) must be offered the course as a SL work assignment in one of the following six (6) semesters, depending on the number of sections available and their seniority vis-a-vis other Sessionals who also have RoFR for the course. The cascade of how competing RoFR is handled is found in Appendix F.
Sessionals will be invited to exercise their Right of First Refusal by way of the online hiring system. Except in extenuating circumstances, failure to accept the invitation within the timeframe provided will be deemed as a refusal to exercise their Right of First Refusal. Where a posting is to be filled by a Sessional who has indicated that they will exercise their RoFR, the hiring should be done through a Not Public posting and the Sessional should be given information on how to access it to submit their application. See Article 11.03.
Sometimes a department will want to post the position publicly anyway even if an RoFR exists, and such postings will indicate when a "Sessional Lecturer Currently Holds a Right of First Refusal for this Course", and where applicable, the "Number of Assignments that Carry the Right of First Refusal". Special circumstances apply for ROFR for Applied Music courses in the School of Fine Art and Music.
Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply to publicly posted work assignments regardless of whether they carry the RoFR.
