TA Performance Evaluation Guidelines

As per 13.02(b): Evaluations can rate employees as “Satisfactory”, “Improvement Required” or “Unsatisfactory”.

  • For Improvement Required or Unsatisfactory, must provide constructive feedback and where applicable a period for correcting concerns.
  • May not use student evaluations as the sole reason for unsatisfactory or improvement required ratings.
  • Also, need to take into account response rate when using student evaluations.

Faculty and Academic Staff Relations has prepared a Guide to Performance Evaluations for Teaching Assistants and Graduate Service Assistants covered under the CUPE 3913, Unit 1 Collective Agreement. This guide and accompanying assessment template are designed to assist supervisors in performing regular evaluations of their TAs and GSAs. Both are available below.

Departments are free to develop their own performance evaluation form.

If you have any questions, please contact Faculty and Academic Staff Relations.

NOTE: As per art. 13.05, it is the duties and responsibilities as outlined in the TA Assignment of Work Agreement on which any Performance Evaluation of a TA is conducted: "All evaluations shall be in writing and based solely on the performance of those duties specified in the Assignment of Work Agreement."  See the template for TA Assignment of Work Agreements.
