Required competence, capability, skill and ability related to course content:
This course considers several key aspects of applied field biology. Students will develop important field skills, including identification and biodiversity survey skills. Students will also complete field data organization and data digitization, followed by data quality checking and graphical and statistical analysis using the R language. This course also enables students to become familiar with several key policies and laws that are relevant for field biology, such as the Species at Risk Act and the Fisheries Act, and associated field and technical guidance documents and field protocols. Oral, written, and visual communication skills, considering diverse stakeholders, as well as collaboration are also emphasized. The Instructor is responsible for organizing the field days, developing and delivering the lecture materials and ensuring all Learning Objectives are met. To increase flexibility and accessibility for students, this course is offered in mainly hybrid format, whereby students can participate either in person or online. We encourage participation during class time (whether in person or online) as much as possible, as synchronous, active-learning activities are an important component of the course. There are three field days where in person attendance is required. This course takes a learner-centred approach, whereby students are primarily completing learning activities with instructor guidance. A mixture of teaching modes will be used, including: short lectures, small-group learning activities in the classroom and in the field, analytical activities, discussions, guest speakers, student-led presentations, and learning through doing projects. Excellent organizational skills. Demonstrated skills in communication and leadership to a diverse audience. Works closely with the Director of the MWB to ensure alignment with the MWB program and that course goals are met.
