This course examines the social basis of law. Specific topics include the law as an instrument of stability or change, and the role of lawmakers, law enforcers and interpreters, including the legal profession, the police, judges and courts. Although the primary focus of this course is Canadian, there will be a comparative component particularly as it relates to theoretical perspectives. This course specifically focus on: types of law, theories of law, origins of law, social control and punishment, the legal profession, assessing the impact of the law, existing biases in the law particularly as it relates to women, and law and social change. Candidates should provide in their application evidence of prior teaching experience and teaching success/excellence related to course content, which may include a dossier, teaching philosophy, examples of teaching innovations, course developments, evaluations of previously taught courses (e.g., peer evaluations and/or student feedback), reference letters, and any other relevant information they wish to have evaluated by the selection committee (some documents on file in the department or program, such as UofGH Student Feedback Questionnaires of courses taught on UofG contracts, may also be used). Experience in the field and/or recent research activity. Specific experience or example demonstrating expertise in law and its integration into society.
