This course introduces students to the social determinants of health and its relationship to health inequities and population health. A critical lens will be adopted to understand how the medical model has shaped the categorization of health and disease and the evolving intersection between the social determinants of health and mental health. Candidates should provide in their application evidence of prior teaching experience and teaching success/excellence related to course content, which may include a dossier, teaching philosophy, examples of teaching innovations, course developments, evaluations of previously taught courses (e.g., peer evaluations and/or student feedback), reference letters, and any other relevant information they wish to have evaluated by the selection committee (some documents on file in the department or program, such as UofGH Student Feedback Questionnaires of courses taught on UofG contracts, may also be used). Previous teaching and experience with D2L (course website platform) with evidence of student engagement. Professional experience analyzing and addressing health inequities and social determinants of health through applied work in healthcare, community-based services, social policy, public health, or mental health systems, with attention to the social, political, and economic factors shaping access, practice, and policy. Research background examining social determinants of health, health inequities, and population mental health through critical analysis of social, economic, political, and historical factors.

Section DE01: This is a distance education course offering. As such, significant online monitoring, supervision and feedback related to student learning activities is required.
