MakerSpace FAQ
Have question about what the MakerSpace is and how it works? See our frequently asked questions below to learn more about the space! If you have any additional questions that were not answered below, please email us at makerspace@uoguelph.ca and we would be happy to help.
The Makerspace is a creative space where students can use a variety of tools and equipment to bring their ideas to life. You can work on academic or personal projects using our equipment such as 3D printers, laser engravers, Cricut Makers, sewing machines and embroidery machines.
When you visit, our Makerspace Assistants are available to help you learn how to use the equipment. They’ll guide you through the process, answer questions, and help you get started. The goal is for you to create the project yourself and learn the skills to use the tools independently. No prior experience is required, and everyone is welcome to explore, learn, and make at their own pace.
We also have equipment available to sign-out and use on your own time such as professional cameras, microphones, adaptors, tripods, lighting equipment, and more!
It depends on the size of your project. For most small projects and workshops, the MakerSpace provides the materials you’ll need. If you’re planning a larger project or want to make multiple items, we may ask you to bring in some materials to donate to the space for your use. This helps us keep the Makerspace stocked and available for everyone. If you’re ever unsure, the Makerspace staff are happy to help you figure out what materials you’ll need before you start.
You can view all of our current workshops on the Current Events page linked here, and sign up by clicking the Register button for the workshop you’re interested in. Registration is encouraged to save your spot, but if you’re unsure you can attend or decide last minute, drop-ins are always welcome! Workshops are free to attend and all materials are provided.
Unfortunately, the Makerspace is not open on weekends. Our regular hours are Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Makerspace is open to all University of Guelph students, including undergraduate and graduate students in any degree program, as well as faculty and staff. Even though the space is located in Macdonald Hall, it is not limited to business students. Everyone at the University of Guelph is welcome to use the Makerspace!
We do have a printer but only to be used for MakerSpace projects. If you need to print your class assignment, please visit the Library.
All rental equipment is free to sign out! Equipment is available to sign out for up to 2 weeks at a time under your student ID.
