Welcome! New Faculty Member - Dr. Ismail Noyan

July 24, 2026

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Ismail Noyan has joined the History Department as Assistant Professor in the History of the Middle East.
Dr. Noyan is a political historian of the late Ottoman Empire and the modern Middle East with a particular interest in comparative imperial frameworks. His dissertation, “Ahmed Cevdet Pasha: A Connected History of a Late Ottoman Governor, Jurist, and Intellectual [1823-1895],” uses Ahmet Cevdet Pasha as a tour guide to explore the experiences with modernity across and beyond the Ottoman Empire. It seeks to move beyond national historiographies that inadequately account for global contexts, as well as Eurocentric and diffusionist approaches that treat the European experience as the standard for comparison in understanding 19th-century Ottoman modernity.

Prior to joining the University of Guelph, Dr. Noyan taught a wide array of courses at universities and colleges in the British Columbia lower mainland and on Vancouver Island.

Welcome!
