Electrical Engineering Co-op Student Information
About The Program
Electrical Engineering at the University of Guelph prepares students to design the technologies and infrastructure that power and connect our world. Through a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, electronics, power systems, and control engineering, students learn how to develop systems that generate, transmit, process, and manage both energy and information. From circuit design and embedded systems to renewable energy and automation, students gain hands-on experience applying engineering principles to real-world challenges. The program emphasizes innovation, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, equipping graduates with the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Graduates are well prepared for careers in industries such as renewable energy, semiconductors, telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, automation, and advanced manufacturing, as well as opportunities in graduate studies and research.
*Students can choose to specialize in Microelectronics and Smart Devices, Connected Systems and Automation, or Electromagnetics and Sustainable Energy, tailoring their education to their career interests.
Why Co-op?
The Electrical Engineering Co-op program combines academic learning with paid work experience over a five-year degree, allowing students to apply classroom knowledge in professional engineering environments before graduation. Through multiple work terms, students gain practical industry experience, explore potential career paths, and develop the technical and professional skills sought by employers.
Guelph's co-op program is distinguished by its high level of student support. Before beginning their work term search, students complete a co-op preparation course that helps them develop effective job search, resume, interview, and workplace skills. Throughout their co-op journey, students receive personalized guidance from a team of experienced co-op professionals committed to their development and success.
By graduation, co-op students have built a strong professional network, gained meaningful industry experience, and developed the confidence to transition successfully into their careers.
