Guelph Grad Story: Precision Agriculture Specialist, Landyn Bowen

Landyn Bowen, a U of G grad and a Precision Agriculture Specialist is helping farmers make smarter, tech-driven decisions to help feed the world.

Landyn graduated in 2024 with a focus on agriculture and food. While his roots are in agriculture, he states that "agriculture and food is for everyone—regardless of where you are from."

Landyn credits U of G’s co-op program with providing the hands-on experiences that shaped his career.

During his placements, Landyn worked at Premier Equipment, where he first explored precision agriculture, and at Maizex, where he contributed to agricultural research. He also completed a term in Australia, gaining global insights into agriculture.

“Agriculture is about science, technology, business, and innovation. Even if you didn’t grow up on a farm, you can find your place in this industry. We need people with different skills and perspectives to tackle the challenge of feeding the world.”

Co-op Experiences Shapes Your Career

One of his most impactful co-op terms was on a cash crop and grain elevator operation, where he learned about commodity handling and environmentally friendly practices.

“I actually completed a research study as my project during that placement,” Landyn recalls. “It was a fantastic learning experience that introduced me to sustainable agriculture practices.”

These diverse co-op experiences helped Landyn refine his career path and build a strong foundation for his role in precision agriculture.

A Career with Purpose

Landyn works with farmers to troubleshoot technologies, analyze data, and find ways to improve their operations. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see how technology can transform a farm,” he says. “I love being part of an industry that’s not just about growing food but also about finding sustainable solutions for the future.

What is Precision Agriculture?

Also called “smart farming,” precision agriculture uses advanced tools like GPS, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics to help farmers optimize their operations. There’s a massive amount of technology and innovation in current agricultural practices – precision agriculture is just the “tip of the iceberg.”

By integrating technology into farming, precision agriculture not only increases productivity but also supports environmentally responsible practices.

“Farmers collect a lot of data from their equipment—things like GPS tracking and yield analytics,” Landyn says. “My job is to help them interpret and apply that information to save time, reduce costs, and be more sustainable.”
