Fire Safety Training
CourseLink Module – Coming Fall 2025
Stay tuned for an official launch of our University of Guelph Fire Safety Courselink Module. The course will teach you the basics of fire and life safety to ensure that when you are on, or off campus, you are able to keep yourselves and others safe. This module, replacing the Fire Warden training program, is anticipated to launch in Fall 2025. You will be able to self enroll on CourseLink.
In-Person Fire Extinguisher Training
The Fire Prevention Officers run in person Fire Extinguisher training sessions across campus. This is an opportunity for members of our campus to use the fire extinguisher simulation and gain the skillset to use a fire extinguisher if necessary.
- Dates and locations will be posted here in Fall 2025 as well as on GryphLife.ca.
Group or Department Training Requests
The Fire Prevention Division frequently runs training programs for departments or student groups running special events or responsible for the fire and life safety of others in their buildings. If you require the Fire Prevention Officers to run a training for your group, please email us at request-fire@uoguelph.ca with the specifics you are looking for.
Fire Extinguishers
Fire Extinguishers can be a great early defense against a small sized fire, however your safety is the top priority. If you are uncomfortable trying to put the fire out, it would be unsafe to try, or the fire is larger than a beachball, do not try to put the fire out. Instead, ensure help is on the way by activating the alarm and promptly exit the building.
Prior to using the fire extinguisher, activate the fire alarm to ensure that help is on the way.
If you are comfortable trying to extinguish a small sized fire (the size of a beachball) with a fire extinguisher, activate the fire alarm to ensure that help is on the way, and then remember PASS:
Pull the Pin - Hold the extinguisher by the carrying handle and pull/twist the pin out. Do not place you hand on the trigger because this will make it impossible to pull the pin out.
Aim at the base of the fire - Aim at the lowest part edge of the fire, if you aim at the flames you will never put it out.
Squeeze the trigger - Fully depress the trigger with the palm of your hand and expel the entire extinguisher onto the base of the fire.
Sweep back and forth - Sweep the extinguisher back and forth, making sure you extend beyond the edges of the fire to ensure you completely cover the base of the fire.
