Dr. Peter Sikkema [1], a renowned weed scientist and long-time researcher and educator at the University of Guelph’s Ridgetown Campus, has been named one of six 2025 inductees [2] into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame.
Over his distinguished career, Sikkema developed practical, research-driven weed management programs that helped producers in Ontario and beyond reduce yield losses and increase profitability. Internationally recognized for his work on herbicide-resistant weeds in corn, soybeans, small grains and edible beans, he remained focused on real-world solutions, ensuring his research translated into improved practices on the farm.
Known for his grounded, extension-focused approach, Sikkema has earned numerous accolades for research, teaching, and outreach. He was nominated for this honour by the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO).
Sikkema has trained over 40 graduate students including many who have studied the impact of glyphosate- resistant weeds and developed management solutions to minimize crop yield loss due to weed interference and to maximize net returns per acre.
Sikkema was inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2021.
The 2025 inductees will be formally celebrated at a ceremony on November 8 in Victoria, B.C. The Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made outstanding lifetime contributions to Canada’s agriculture and food industry.
