The Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (FARE) at the University of Guelph proudly congratulates alumnus Nicholas Bannon on his induction into the Centre Dufferin District High School (CDDHS) Athletic Hall of Fame.
Born in Orangeville and raised in Shelburne, Bannon distinguished himself as an outstanding multi-sport athlete at CDDHS. Competing in cross-country running, track and field, basketball, badminton, baseball, volleyball, and golf, he demonstrated remarkable versatility and commitment. He helped lead the Royals to back-to-back D4 basketball championships in 2015 and 2016, along with a CWOSSA junior boys title in 2016. In track and field, he earned D4 senior boys gold medals in both the 3000m and steeplechase, while also delivering strong performances at OFSAA, including a fourth-place finish in the steeplechase and 13th in cross-country.
Bannon continued his academic and athletic career at the University of Guelph, where he completed both undergraduate and master’s degrees in Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics. During this time, he established himself as one of the top distance runners in Ontario University Athletics (OUA). He contributed to multiple Guelph cross-country team championships (2019, 2021, 2023) and a U SPORTS silver-medal finish in 2021. Individually, he captured OUA cross-country gold in 2023 and earned three U SPORTS second-team All-Canadian honours.
On the track, Bannon played a key role in Guelph’s OUA and U SPORTS championship teams from 2022 to 2024. His individual highlights include a U SPORTS silver medal in the 3000m (2023), bronze (2024), OUA gold in the 3000m (2024), and OUA silver in the 1500m (2024). He also represented Ontario at the 2022 Ontario Summer Games.
Academically, Bannon ranked among the University of Guelph’s top students, earning numerous prestigious awards. He received the W.C. Winegard Medal (2022), the university’s highest convocation honour recognizing academic excellence and contributions to campus and community life. His other major awards include the Arrell Graduate Scholarship, the Ron and Eleanor Durst Graduate Scholarship in Agricultural Economics, and the Class of ’51 OAC Leadership Prize (all 2022). He also received the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society Undergraduate Book Prize and the C.W. Riley Prize for highest standing in his program. Additional distinctions include multiple Dean’s Scholarships, the Braithwaite Business Scholarship, and the University of Guelph President’s Scholarship.
Beyond academics and athletics, Bannon demonstrated strong leadership and community engagement. He served as a graduate council representative and Treasurer of the Student Athlete Mental Health Initiative, mentored incoming President’s Scholars, and contributed through coaching, outreach, and volunteer service in the Guelph community.
“Nick exemplifies dedication, discipline, and excellence, pairing outstanding athletic achievement with academic success,” said Getu Hailu. “His accomplishments highlight his leadership, work ethic, and meaningful impact within both the university and broader community.”
Bannon reflected on the honour, noting, “It’s incredibly meaningful to be recognized by CDDHS, where my passion for both sport and learning really began. I’m grateful to my coaches, teachers, teammates, and family for their constant support, and I hope this recognition encourages current students to pursue their goals with commitment and balance.”
Bannon’s induction into the CDDHS Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes his exceptional contributions to sport and his continued role as a model for future student-athletes.
