A big congratulations to Munira Abdul-Nasir, one of FARE’s incoming graduate students, who has been awarded the prestigious Arrell Food Institute Scholarship, valued at $100,000.

Munira has been admitted into the M.Sc. program in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (FARE) at the University of Guelph under the supervision of Dr. Getu Hailu. Originally from Accra, Ghana, she recently graduated magna cum laude from New York University Abu Dhabi with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (with a minor in Math), specializing in Development Economics.

During her undergraduate studies, Munira worked as a Research Assistant at the Center for Technology, Economics and Development at NYU Abu Dhabi. In this role, she supported a blockchain-based agricultural financing project in Ghana and contributed to research on agricultural innovations and policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries.

Munira’s research focuses on understanding why agricultural innovations with the potential to enhance productivity and sustainability are not always widely adopted. Specifically, she examines how policies, markets, and institutions influence the availability and adoption of biological crop inputs in Canada’s grain and pulse sectors. Through her work, she aims to identify effective strategies for scaling sustainable agricultural technologies and supporting productive, resilient, and environmentally sustainable food systems—aligning closely with the Arrell Food Institute’s vision of sustainable, healthy, and resilient food systems.
