Programs

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety runs a variety of Safety Programs at the University of Guelph.

Agricultural / Industrial Safety programs will be of interest to agricultural workers and researchers, and those performing similar work, such as landscaping and sports- fields maintenance. These programs have a diverse focus, ranging from field crop, fruit or vegetable production, to a variety of animal and fish husbandry operations to small plot and greenhouse research studies.

Biosafety programs focus on the safe management of biohazardous materials including micororganisms and biological toxins that cause disease in humans, animals, and plants. These programs will typically be of interest to personnel in a laboratory setting.

Facilities Safety programs are about the buildings and environments that workers and researches find themselves in, excluding laboratory safety. These programs include asbestos management, dealing with mold, working in confined spaces and how to perform lock-outs and tag-outs.

Lab Safety programs encompass how to work safely in a laboratory setting, and how to deal with hazardous wasteTransportation of dangerous goods is also included.  These programs will likely be of interest to lab technicians, researchers and students.

Occupational Hygiene Safety programs include machine safety and personal protective equipment programs. These programs are intended for people doing field research or working in a shop and can apply to all employees and students using machine tools.

Radiation Safety programs educate staff, faculty and students on managing contact with radiation. This can mean anything from laser light, to X-ray, to emissions from specialty microwave heaters, to subatomic particles from radioactive materials.
