MSc (thesis or course-based) & PhD Application Process

Applications to FARE graduate programs are co-ordinatored through the Graduate Program Committee.

The application package includes the online application form plus the supplementary materials listed below.

NOTE:  It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required documentation is submitted by the deadline.  All required supporting documentation must be received by the application date to be considered complete. 

Required Application Materials:

  4. Statement of Interest - If you are applying to the Master of Science program,
    clearly indicate at the top of your Statement of Interest whether you are interested
    in the Course Based program or theThesis Based program.
  5. Official and certified transcripts
  6. Two Letters of Reference
  7. English Language requirements - if required
  8. General Graduate Record Examination - NOW REQUIRED FOR ALL PhD applicants.

 

Deadline for applications: January 30, 2013 but RECOMMEND by January 1st to allow time to receive all information for September 2013 entry.  Please note application for Fall 2012 is now closed.  We are accepting Fall 2013 applications starting in September 2012.  We encourage International students to apply earlier than the required deadline to allow extra time to process your application and to ensure receipt of all required documents. 

Entry Period: September only; Winter and Summer entry is NOT available.

 

We encourage you to read the admission requirements to the program of interest prior to completing your application. Once we have received your application you will receive an acknowledgement by e-mail. We will notify you if any further information is required at any stage of the process. If you require an update on the status of your application, please do not hesitate to contact the Graduate Program Assistant. We cannot guarantee that incomplete applications or applications received after January 31 will be considered for admission that year. Applications received without an application fee will not be considered.

Completed applications will be reviewed at the beginning of February.  Recommendations to Graduate Program Services will be made in early to mid March; official letters are sent to applicants from Graduate Program Services within a couple of weeks of the department recommendation.

You are encouraged to  contact our Graduate Coordinator, John Cranfield for further information about the program and about your academic interests. Take a look at our faculty listing and feel free to contact anyone directly who you feel may share your research interests.  Securing an advisor prior to your application is NOT required in order to apply.

4. Official transcripts

Original or certifiied documents are required, including grading scales and degree certificates; certified and sealed in an envelope from the awarding institution or a public notary.

5. Two letters of recommendation / reference

Please use the "Assessment of an Applicant" form which can be obtained through the on-line application or at: http://www.uoguelph.ca/registrar/graduatestudies/files/app-4.pdf  These reference letters should be received in a signed and sealed envelope.

6.  Statement of Interest -

If you are applying to the Master of Science program clearly indicate at the beginning of your Statement of Interest whether you are interested in the Course Based master or the Thesis Based master program.

7.  NEW - General Graduate Record Examination

The GRE general exam is a REQUIRED for PhD applicants beginning in Fall 2013.  Please be sure to allow time to write this examination prior to the application deadline.

8. English Language requirements

If your first language is not English, you will need to provide an original copy of your English language score.

International Students:

International applicants requiring a Student Authorization/Visa are advised that it is their responsibility to apply to the respective Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. In general, this can only be undertaken once an offer of admission to a program has been issued and the original offer documents have been received from the University of Guelph. Depending on the country of residence, this process may take several weeks or months to complete. In general, documentation will also be required to indicate that you have sufficient funds available for the first years of your studies.
