The Opportunity:

The Department of Plant Agriculture, Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph, invites applications for a full-time, tenure track, Assistant Professor Position, in Field Crop Production with emphasis in Precision Agriculture systems. This position is located at the Guelph campus. It will initially be funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) project Food from Thought, Agricultural Systems for a Healthy Planet. The goal of this project is to strengthen multi-disciplinary research focussed on enhancing economic, environmental and social well being as well as the global competitiveness of our agri-food system.

The successful candidate will develop and lead a comprehensive research program integrating concepts in agroecology with data-intensive precision agriculture tools (e.g. remote sensing, geographic information systems, variable rate application technology) to enhance economic and environmental sustainability of field crop production in Ontario, while maximizing provision of ecosystem services. They will work collaboratively with a large team of researchers engaged in multidisciplinary projects focussed on agriculture’s effects on ecosystem health. Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in Agroecology and Precision Agriculture, and training of highly qualified personnel including graduate students. The incumbent will serve as a department resource for other research programs making use of remote sensing technologies, actively engage in extending research results to external user groups, and participate in various committees internal and external to the University.

The position requires a PhD in Agronomy, Crop Science, Agroecology or related field, with experience in conducting field research involving precision agriculture technologies, including analysis and interpretation of high-resolution spatial data.

The Department of Plant Agriculture is Canada’s largest and most diverse applied plant biology department and has recognized strengths in a broad cross-section of plant sciences including horticulture, breeding, molecular genetics, genomics, agronomy, controlled environment systems, turf and crop physiology. The Department currently has 33 faculty members and employs 100 staff and more than 100 graduate students. Faculty within the Department have access to modern laboratory, growth room and greenhouse facilities, as well as fourteen well-equipped research stations across the province operated with support from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. As part of the Ontario Agricultural College, Plant Agriculture has a long history of achievements in serving the agriculture and agri-food industries within Ontario and beyond.

The University of Guelph is a top-ranked comprehensive university in Canada with an enrolment of about 23,000 students. It is located in Guelph, Ontario (population of approximately 120,000) and is a one-hour drive west of Toronto, Ontario.
