Position Description:
The School of Engineering at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track teaching focused position at the Assistant Professor level.
Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and a doctorate in Biological or Environmental Engineering (or a related field). Applicants must have teaching experience at the University level and have a demonstrated record of teaching excellence. Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario within five years of hiring is a requirement of this position.
We seek candidates whose teaching, research and service interests reflect our School’s values and complement our existing strengths.
The successful applicant is expected to focus on the development and delivery of academic programs in engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate level. They will also develop a research program, which may be discipline specific, interdisciplinary, or focussed in engineering education and pedagogy. They will mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and provide service within and external to the University. The successful candidate will lead aspects of the School’s Graduate Attributes process.
Qualified applicants must have the expertise to teach a large number of our courses, particularly our core engineering design sequence, engineering analysis, and engineering systems courses. In the School of Engineering, students from different undergraduate programs share courses in fundamental engineering science and engineering design. We are particularly interested in applicants who can engage students in different engineering programs in large classes. The successful applicant will also be able to teach a selection of senior undergraduate courses in our environmental and/or biological engineering programs as well as graduate courses in these disciplines. Responsibilities will include advising undergraduate design teams.
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and interest in teaching-related scholarly activity. To provide evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry, applicants must submit a teaching dossier that includes: a teaching statement describing philosophy, approach, interests, and experience in all pedagogical settings including classroom, engineering design instruction, laboratory, tutorials, workshops, small group and individual mentorship; awards and accolades; and evidence of successful teaching (e.g. peer evaluations or unsolicited student feedback).

Preference will be given to the candidate who will combine excellence in teaching with a demonstrated capacity to conduct novel, interdisciplinary research that will expand and complement our current research strengths. Preference will be given to individuals with a proven background in accreditation and/or graduate attributes, including assessment approaches. The School has particular emphasis in engineering design and therefore candidates with experience in engineering design and engineering design pedagogy are preferred.
The University of Guelph has well-established and accredited undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Engineering Systems and Computing, Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. At present, the School is comprised of over 62 faculty members, 34 staff and technicians, 1700 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students.
