The Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of comparative animal physiology.
The successful candidate may employ field and/or lab-based experiments to study the cellular and physiological mechanisms responsible for enabling animals (marine, freshwater, terrestrial) to adapt to, or survive in, changing or challenging environmental conditions. The research area should complement that of existing faculty in the IB physiology group whose expertise bridges endocrinology, environmental toxicology, neurobiology, stress physiology, developmental biology, comparative biochemistry, and adaptational physiology in a range of species and habitats.
In addition, applicants whose focus would make use of existing facilities (e.g., Hagen Aqualab) or expand our research expertise into underrepresented areas (e.g., invertebrate physiology, evolutionary physiology) would be well regarded. Qualified applicants must hold a Ph.D., and relevant postdoctoral experience in physiology will be required, along with evidence of strong potential to establish a productive, externally-funded, research program, including supportive, valuable mentorship of graduate students. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to effective and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level and be able to contribute to teaching in areas such as general biology, physiology, and/or courses in vertebrate or invertebrate biology. More specifically, applicants may contribute to teaching in any of our majors (e.g., Marine and Freshwater Biology, Zoology, Biodiversity, Wildlife Biology & Conservation) as well as experiential learning opportunities.
The Department of Integrative Biology is in the College of Biological Science, a vibrant and exciting center for discovery-based research that regularly brings in funding in excess of 20M per annum. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic, multidisciplinary department with 37 faculty and an excellent record for research in physiology, evolutionary biology, ecology, conservation biology, and biodiversity, encompassing a wide range of taxa and levels of biological organization from molecules to ecosystems. The successful candidate will have access to a variety of sophisticated lab facilities such as the Advanced Analysis Centre, the Hagen Aqualab, and Limnotron, as well as several field stations.

The research statement (2 pages max) should present a vision of the long-term goals of the research program as well as several short-term goals (e.g., 1-2 examples of graduate students' projects that could be completed within a five-year time frame). The teaching/mentorship statement (2 pages max) should describe an overall teaching and mentorship philosophy, provide examples of specific teaching strategies that have been used effectively in previous courses, summarize potential teaching contributions in the department, and include examples of graduate student mentorship. The diversity statement (1 page max) should describe the strategies you plan to use to ensure your research, teaching, and mentorship activities provide equitable opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds and to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment in your courses and research group.
