Community-Based Learning Initiative
The Department of Human Health Sciences is providing opportunities for individual students, or small groups of students, to participate in community-based learning activities in the BSc Human Kinetics, Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, Bio-Medical Sciences and Neuroscience degree majors. Community-Based Learning is broadly defined as learning that takes place outside of university classrooms and laboratories and which involves a community partner. In this department, it is primarily focused on four distinct learning activities: volunteerism, service-based learning, community-engaged learning and scholarship and community-engaged research. The Department of Human Health Sciences will offer 400-level, restricted-elective course credits for projects which fall in the domains of a) Community-Engaged Research and b) Community-Engaged Learning and Scholarship. Service-Based Learning and Volunteerism will remain extracurricular activities, but the department will provide a mentoring service to help students integrate these experiences with their curricular learning and to enhance career development.

Community-Engaged Research: Opportunities and Coursework Credit
All Community-Engaged Research projects will be eligible to receive credit under the following classes. Dr. John Srbely (jsrbely@uoguelph.ca) is the course coordinators for these classes.
HK*4360 Research in Human Health and Nutritional Sciences S,F,W (0-12) [1.00]
The student will select a research topic and design and complete a project in an area of interest, in consultation with a faculty advisor. Students must make arrangements with both a faculty advisor and the course coordinator at least one semester in advance and the signature of the course coordinator will be required to select the course. A departmental registration form must be obtained from the course coordinator and submitted no later than the second class day of the semester in which the student is registered for the course.

HK*4371/2 Research in Human Health and Nutritional Sciences II S-F,F-W,W-S [1.00]

This is a two-semester course offered over consecutive semesters. When you select it you must select HK*4371 in the first semester and HK*4372 in the second semester. A grade will not be assigned to HK*4371 until HK*4372 has been completed. Students must make arrangements with both a faculty advisor and the course coordinator at least one semester in advance and the signature of the course coordinator will be required to select the course. A departmental registration form must be obtained from the course coordinator and submitted no later than the second class day of the semester in which the student is registered for the course.

Community-Engaged Learning and Scholarship: Opportunities and Coursework Credit

HK*4510 Teaching, Learning & Knowledge Transfer S,F,W (0-12) [1.00]
In consultation with a faculty advisor, the student will select, design and complete an independent project on the scholarship of teaching, learning and/or knowledge transfer in human health. Students must make arrangements with both a faculty advisor and the course coordinator at least one semester in advance and the signature of the course coordinator will be required to select the course. A departmental registration form must be obtained from the course coordinator and submitted no later than the second class day of the semester in which the student is registered for the course.

HK*4511/2 Teaching, Learning & Knowledge Transfer II S,F,W (0-6) [1.00]
In consultation with a faculty advisor, the student will select, design and complete an independent project on the scholarship of teaching, learning and/or knowledge transfer in human health. This is a two-semester course offered over consecutive semesters; when you select it you must select HK*4511 in the first semester and HK*4512 in the second semester (a grade will not be assigned to HK*4511 until HK*4512 has been completed). Students must make arrangements with both a faculty advisor and the course coordinator at least one semester in advance and the signature of the course coordinator will be required to select the course. A departmental registration form must be obtained from the course coordinator and submitted no later than the second class day of the semester in which the student is registered for the course.

Service-Based Learning: Opportunities and Academic and Career Mentorship
All Service-Based Learning projects will be considered an extracurricular activity. However, the Department of Human Health Sciences will help to establish the learning outcomes of the project, keep and record the dates, times and nature of the project, and help the student assess the achievement of, and reflect upon, the learning outcomes. Assistance will be provided to help integrate the defined learning outcomes into the degree major and career aspirations of the student. Contact Dr. John Srbely (jsrbely@uoguelph.ca) for details.

All Community Volunteerism projects sponsored by the Department of Human Health Sciences will be considered an extracurricular activity. Assistance will be provided to help integrate the learning experience into the degree major and career aspirations of the student. Typical community volunteer activities might include:
