Lauren Lasocha

Lauren Lasocha is a graduate from the turfgrass management program. She now works as a senior agronomist at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, California. We recently chatted with Lauren to learn more about her University of Guelph experience and her impact on the turf industry.

Tell us about your role.

I am currently a senior agronomist at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, California. I, along with another assistant, coordinate with the director on all aspects that include planning, preparing, and improving the golf course. My role includes staff scheduling, pay roll, forecasting and budgeting water usage, inventory management, overseeing chemical applications and daily supervision of 30 staff.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I most enjoy spending time with our staff during the morning course setup and tournament preparation. Accomplishing so much as daylight is just breaking is a great feeling. Our job is very detail oriented, and the staff do a great job executing their tasks. 

What industry trends are you keeping an eye on?

Leadership roles in the industry and how they are diversifying. There is a lot of movement in our industry and key roles are being filled by younger leaders and more women. It is also great to see younger golfers taking up the game and enjoying it. 

What has had the biggest impact on your career?

I was fortunate to travel to number of places that helped shape who I am today. This included working and living in Sydney, Australia and traveling throughout Europe. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to fulfill my internship outside of Canada, in Massachusetts.  The people I have met in the industry have been very helpful and supportive.

What inspired you to pursue Turfgrass Management at the University of Guelph?

The superintendent and first assistant at Capilano Golf and Country Club, where I first started in the industry, were former University of Guelph alumni and had great things to say about the program. Also, while at Capilano, British Columbia, I met a few interns from the program who said they were really enjoying it. After hearing about their experiences, I was very interested and knew that it was something that would not only help me get started in the industry but further my career. 

What is an unforgettable experience you had while at U of G?

Our 16A class having fun in and out of the classroom and participating in the program’s annual tradition of sodding the cannon. I will also never forget the first snowfall and still seeing people wandering around campus sporting Birkenstock sandals and socks. 

What advice do you have for those interested in Diploma in Turfgrass Management program?

Reach out and ask other people about their experiences in the program and how it has helped them with their career. Talking to other people about their expectations and experiences will help you make your decision.
