About the CIO

Bio

In April 2025, Stephen Willem became the Interim Associate Vice-President and Chief Information Officer (CIO). Stephen brings more than 20 years of experience in the information technology sector, both private and public.

Stephen joined the University of Guelph in June 2015 as Manager of Information Security and was promoted to Chief Information Security Officer in 2019. During his tenure, he created the U of G Security Operations Centre, represented CCS in the University's COVID-19 response as a member of the Emergency Operations Centre, and led the response to the IT incident in 2022. He has also initiated several improvements in identity management and security at the University. In addition to his interim AVP & Chief Information Officer role, Stephen will continue to lead U of G’s Information Security Team. Prior to joining U of G, Stephen held various technical and leadership roles within the private sector, including Senior Network Security Engineer at Nortel Networks and Manager of Global Cyber Security Operations and Systems at BlackBerry. 

During his role as interim CIO, Stephen’s main goals are to provide stability to the CCS organization so that staff can continue to provide excellent customer service and stable and secure infrastructure operations. 

About the Office of the CIO

The Office of the CIO oversees the strategic and policy administration of the University’s information technology, services and resources. This includes information security, network access and infrastructure, enterprise applications and client support. The CIO provides vision, leadership and advocacy for a secure, reliable and innovative IT environment enabling excellence in teaching, learning and research. The CIO reports to the Vice-President (Finance & Operations).
