Position Description:

The Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) at the University of Guelph invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics from internal University of Guelph Associate or Full Professors.

Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (FARE) is the most research-intensive department in Canada, and one of the most intensive in North America. Its research and teaching programs focus on: Economics of Food; International Trade & Development; Environmental and Resource Economics; Behavioral and Experimental Economics; and Agricultural Policy and Regulation. The Department is an active contributor to undergraduate education and offers three undergraduate majors in Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics major in the Bachelor of Arts, Food and Agricultural Business major in the Bachelor of Commerce, and Environmental Economics and Policy. FARE offers a PhD program, as well as both thesis- and course-based master’s programs. The Department is also home to the FARE Laboratory for Experimental and Applied Economics, where laboratory and field experiments are used to explore a wide range of human decision-making related to food and agri-environmental issues. As part of OAC, FARE has a long history of achievements in serving the agriculture and agri-food industries within Ontario and beyond. The Chair of the Department is responsible for the orderly, effective, efficient, sustainable and collegial operation of the Department. They provide leadership for initiatives and support individuals in the fulfillment of their assigned responsibilities. The Chair, through consultation with members of the Department, is responsible for enhancing academic programs, increasing contributions to knowledge, and strengthening relationships with industry and other potential partners. The Chair is also responsible for leading the fiscal sustainability of the Department. The Chair works closely with the OAC Dean’s office with their academic unit head colleagues across OAC. This includes the development and evolution of budget plans which include revenue targets and plans to meet those targets. The appointment will be for a five-year term, with a possibility of renewal for a second five-year term.

The preferred candidate will be a successful educator and leader holding a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Guelph, with a good record of research and scholarly accomplishments and substantive experience in and a dedication to teaching and student success. The Chair will be required to offer vision and leadership, demonstrate innovative thinking, and exhibit strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in human and financial resource management and the ability to engage faculty, staff, and students in developing and executing new initiatives are required. The Chair will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with industry, government agencies, and alumni, including the development of funding and support for scholarly programs. The successful candidate will also have the ability to network, communicate, and facilitate the advancement of the Department, OAC, and the University.
