Remote Delivery Support for OAC Instructors

To assist instructors in OAC with remote delivery, the Associate Dean Academic (ADA) office is collecting curated resources from our supporting departments, OpenEd, the Office of Teaching and Learning, and the Library. The ADA office will send regular email updates through the OAC faculty and staff listserv to keep you up to date on what other departments are doing, upcoming webinars, and links to useful support content. Remote Teaching and Learning

Web Conferencing Tools

The University has three sanctioned web conferencing tools for use at U of G:

Zoom for academic instructional use via the Pro Licence that can be integrated with CourseLink and is supported by OpenEd. Email courselink@opened.uoguelph.ca [18] to get access to the Pro Licence version. Only the Pro Licence version of Zoom provided by OpenEd is recommended for use on campus, as it has additional security controls.
D2L Virtual Classroom: CourseLink's Virtual Classroom tool is an integrated web-conferencing tool that allows for lectures to be livestreamed to up to 150 students.
Teams and Webex for all other business uses - supported by Computing and Communications Services (CCS). For non-instructional use, Teams and Webex are the tools of choice. Teams has recently added new features like a grid view and a raise-hand function and will add a breakout room feature shortly - similar functionality to that desired in Zoom.

You will have to determine which web conferencing tools [19] supported at UofG are going to work for your course.

Technical Support for Zoom

If you are teaching a Distance Education (DE) course email onlinecourseprep@opened.uoguelph.ca [22]. The Quality Assurance team will assist you.

For face-to-face faculty . The Teaching and Learning Team can meet with you regarding the appropriate use of Zoom and breakout rooms. They probably can’t support managing breakout rooms in sessions; however, they can certainly provide some training. There is a form on the Remote Teaching and Learning site for faculty to get pedagogical support [23] directly from the Instructional Technology Specialist team.

Technology for Learning

Use technology in a way that will allow students to learn and share their experiences. They can use blogs, Wikis or social media to collaborate. Challenge your students to try using technology to showcase their understanding. Adopt the mantra “no throw away assignments”. In an online environment we can give students the opportunity to submit work, receive feedback and revise something.

Course Accessibility Resources

The Office of Diversity and Human Rights has an excellent webpage on Accessibility (ADOA) Resources [29].
- Read their Educators’ Accessibility Toolkit [30]
The Digital Accessibility Resource Centre [31] provides training, tools, and support for the creation of accessible digital content, including:
- web content
- PDFs/Word documents
- presentation slides/PowerPoint decks
- video
- audio
- other multimedia
For your students, the Library Accessibility Services [32] provides adaptive software, technology access and instruction, study space, and other services designed to help students who are registered with the Student Accessibility Services (SAS).
The Council of Ontario Universities has a good Educator’s Accessibility Toolkit [33]
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) [34] is the framework you should use build a more accessible course.
Incorporating UDL best practices [10] is probably easier than you think. For example, gather learner feedback during the course, be active in online discussions, and give regular feedback.
